At Mulberry Silverdale Primary, we recognise that the online world provides exciting opportunities for learning, creativity and communication. In line with the Mulberry Schools Trust vision and values, we are committed to ensuring that all pupils are equipped with the knowledge, skills and confidence to use technology safely, responsibly and respectfully.
We believe that safeguarding children online is a shared responsibility between school, families and the wider community. Through our inclusive and nurturing approach, we empower pupils to become responsible digital citizens who understand how to stay safe, make positive choices and show respect for themselves and others online. Online safety is taught explicitly through our PSHE and computing curriculums and is reinforced throughout daily school life whenever children use technology, including our iPads and other digital devices. Reflecting the Mulberry Schools Trust commitment to excellence, equity and wellbeing, we ensure that online safety education is age-appropriate, relevant and responsive to the ever-changing digital world. We also work in partnership with parents and carers by sharing guidance and updates through newsletters whenever new apps, websites or online trends emerge that may pose risks or concerns. Online Safety in Early Years and Key Stage 1 We strongly encourage parents and carers to use parental controls and appropriate filters on devices at home and to ensure that young children are supervised when accessing the internet. While online technology provides valuable opportunities for learning and exploration, unrestricted access can expose children to unsuitable content or experiences. For this reason, we advise that children do not have internet-enabled devices in their bedrooms, where use may be unsupervised for extended periods. Families are encouraged to speak with their child’s class teacher if they would like advice or support around online safety at home.
In the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), Year 1 and Year 2, online safety teaching is carefully adapted so that children can understand clear and simple messages about staying safe online. We use Childnet’s Smartie the Penguin resources to help children learn how to make safe choices when using technology.
Online Safety in Key Stage 2
In Years 3 to 6, pupils build on their understanding of online safety through Childnet’s SMART rules and wider discussions about respectful and responsible online behaviour.
As children become more independent online, we continue to promote the importance of supervision, open conversations and appropriate filtering systems at home. We encourage pupils to think critically, act responsibly and seek support whenever they feel worried or unsafe online.
In line with the Mulberry Schools Trust values of integrity, respect and social responsibility, we teach pupils to use technology in ways that are safe, positive and inclusive.
We also remind families that most social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram and TikTok, have minimum age requirements that do not permit primary-aged children to use them. In our experience, early access to social media can contribute to anxiety, stress, cyberbullying and exposure to inappropriate content.
At Mulberry Silverdale Primary, we are committed to helping children navigate the digital world safely and confidently, ensuring they develop the resilience, understanding and responsibility needed to thrive both online and offline.
